Kidney Walk 2015

I had the honor to travel to Fort Worth and attend the Kidney Walk with some of my relatives.  This event is held by a highly recognized organization called National Kidney Foundation. The NKF Kidney Walk is an inspiring community fundraiser that calls attention to the prevention of kidney disease and the need for organ donation. Walks are held all over the country and I highly recommend you searching for one nearest to you.

The walk I attended was held at Trinity River Trail in Fort Worth.  It was an amazing day filled with food, entertainment and fun.  The goal of the walk is for donations and to raise awareness. NFK stated “With the increase in diabetes and high blood pressure -- two major kidney disease risk factors -- kidney disease is on the rise. We’re working to reach the 1 in 3 American adults at risk with important prevention messages before it's too late. Each year, more than 75,000 walkers join the NKF to raise over $8 million to help kidney patients and their families. More than 80 cents of every dollar donated directly supports programs and services.”  Kidney disease can occur for other reasons besides diabetes and high blood pressure.  Getting educated is key in understanding these conditions as they can affect you or your loved ones.

My family and I were introduced to kidney disease once one of our own was diagnosed several years back.  It was a milestone in all of our lives however ended with a successful transplant two years ago.  Naturally, it can have a different effect on those involved, mainly the one with the kidney disease and the one being the donor. I do not know personally how they felt during these times, but can only say it changed both of their lives forever.  I gave and continue to give my support the best way I know how.
I have always compared my family to the Griswolds in the station wagon from National Lampoons Vacation.  We can be the most silly, odd ball group, completely thrown together with smiles on our faces.  Well mostly smiles and a few of those, you got to be kidding me looks.  But we have love for one another that is only completely understood between us all.  Truth be known, I adore how we are and would not change it.  So you can imagine the walk was no different. We had our humorous times with one another for 3 days straight and our devotion for each other to join the Kidney Walk.

Unfortunately, illness can attack our families so education and support are key.  Your loved ones may not be facing kidney disease but other conditions.  Take time to understand what they are going through.  We have had cancer, strokes, lupus and more to hit my family and all illnesses have certain trials for one another.  Providing love and support is our responsibility when times like these happen.

If you are in the Baton Rouge area and interested in participated in a Kidney Walk, it is being held on May 2, 2015 at the Biomedical Research Park. Go to Kidney.org for more details.  Hope to see you there!
